Before departing on his tour of the Middle East, Roberts traveled widely in France, Italy, and Spain. This watercolor dates from a journey he made to Spain in 1832-33, and probably was painted from life during the trip. Alcalá el Guadaíra is located about six miles southeast of Seville on the Guadaíra River.
