Sir Alfred J. Munnings depicts the start of a hunt when the riders have just set off in search of the fox. He captures the white horse in mid-stride, its head up and ears pricked in concentration. Feathery brush strokes make the foreground vegetation seem almost to rustle and suggest the motion of the horses and hounds as they head off in pursuit of the prey.
